10am - 1pm
$210

Susan Bari Price gained her inspiration to paint when she saw her first Caravaggio while on a school field trip to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum.

Price began her formal studies in art at the age of 18 in the Painting program at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. She continued her studies in Kansas City at the Art Institute and later in Oregon at the University of Oregon where she received her degree. In pursuit of the mastery of her craft, she completed the Aristides Classical Atelier at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. There she studied with Juliette Aristides as well as Tony Ryder and Michael Grimaldi.

Price has worked as a graphic designer and art director throughout her developing career as an artist. Most notable of these projects was the complete redesign of Aldus Corporation’s suite of training materials. Price directed a team of designers and writers who were awarded top honors in the instructional design industry. Price applies her keen sense of design and composition in the thoughtful creation of her paintings.

Price is represented by the Elka Rouskov Gallery in Kirkland and the Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbour. She has shown in numerous group shows and her work can be found in several private collections.

For her more teaching information see Susan’s website above.

This is class is about simple solutions to common painting problems. There are no special secrets to discover. Painting is a language and learning the vocabulary is all you need to master. Every picture is made from brushstrokes and each brushstroke has four attributes: color, value, edges and drawing. We will focus on developing these skills to solve specific  problems as we work through the painting process. It is important to first learn basic skills so that you have control of your work, then you can go crazy and have fun.

*Students are encouraged to bring their own project to work on, or we can design a project together.

Class 1: Drawing
Drawing in the context of painting means correctly placing the right size and shape of color patches.
These color patches together create the painting. When all of these elements work together, your painting will look like your subject.
• Measuring
• Tight or Loose?
Class 2: Color
Getting the color right is probably one of the biggest problems that all artists encounter. We will look at various aspects of color and how we can troubleshoot problems in our paintings:
• The color of light
• Temperature
• The Law of Color
Class 3: Value
Value is the range of light to dark in a subject as well as the tones from white to black in a painting.
• Value Scale
• Simplification (squinting)
• Comparing
Class 4: Edges
If painting is a language, then edges are whispers and shouts!
• Seeing edges
• Painting edges
