Materials List
Self-taken photographs of landscape subjects.
Brushes, in a variety of sizes, primarily hog's hair. These should include a few brushes in the 8 - 10 size range, some 4 - 5 sizes, a few smaller. Filberts are the most useful style, but you may also want to get a few rounds and flats. We won't use sables very much.
Brands I recommend are Isabey (the best), Winsor Newton Rathbone series, Grumbacher Degas series, and Daniel Smith has a self-branded brush with a silver handle that is good.
palette, palette knife, paper towels, medium (I recommend alyd resin, preferably Winsor Newton Liquin) and either turpentine or mineral spirits.
The oils that I recommend are as follows:
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue
Viridian
Alizarin
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna
Venetian Red
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Orange
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Lemon
Titanium White
I also recommend getting several canvases, preferably stretched, no smaller than 16 X 20, up to 24 X 30 or larger. If you prefer to work on masonite panel, I recommend Ampersand Gessoboard. If you have unfinished landscape paintings, feel free to bring them in, with photographs.
These are recommendations, and you are welcome to bring those materials that you already have or are used to using.
